Transfiguration Lesson 3 Year 1 : Introducing Transfigurative Limits
Introduction
Welcome to Transfiguration, once again! Today, as the lesson title states, we will be learning about certain limits to Transfiguration. The laws and limits are known as ‘Gamp’s Law to Elemental Transfiguration’ together. Gamp’s Law basically consists of five basic laws, as an exception for the types of things which cannot be conjured and the properties that can never be taken by conjuring or transforming an object.
Love
Love. Now we come to Love. Love cannot be conjured, or can be brought into a person by a potion or in any magical way, it needs to develop. Love must automatically develop, which is a long process.
Remember Tom Marvolo Riddle’s mother, Merope Gaunt? What did she do? She used Amortentia ; the strongest love potion to change Tom Riddle Sr’s mind and to fall in his heart and then tricked him to marry her, and at last, he left once his mind got to know his love was false. In such situations, love was falsely developed using magical ways, which broke apart soon after.
Food
Food. Now we come to food ; which we eat. It is the most unexplained limit, yes true indeed. You might be thinking that we can conjure food! Why not? We can conjure an Apple to eat it! But the transformed/conjured apple would never have the taste of an original apple, as if conjured, it will have a bland taste, and if transformed, it will have the taste and the nutritional values of the object from which you transformed it! Food can only be multiplied in quantity if available, or summoned if you know where food is available.
Yes, you might be even more confused and curious to learn about why food can be duplicated, but it cannot be conjured. The reason which you are asking for isn't clearly known, yes, but transfiguration researches have found out that the components of food that are required is in the original food, and the spell just simply copies out everything, including taste in the new components. Any wizard/witch cannot tell every single component, including taste for food.
Please note that some transfiguration spells exist, such as the Duck to Desk transformation which can conjure a duck, but when the duck is conjured, even if you consume it, you will not get the taste of the duck, nor the nutritional values that of consuming a original duck has.
Life
Life cannot be given to anyone, even by magic, once a person dies is the policy. Yes, there is no Transfiguration spell, other spells or methods yet devised to bring back a person from the dead.
Yes, there is the resurrection stone, but it only brings the person’s illusion back temporarily, which only spoils our mind, and convinces us to give away life for the person’s shadow. Sometimes, Phoenix Tear’s healing properties can also cure death, but the tears must touch the body just while the person is currently dying. After death, Phoenix Tears are of no use!
You might be thinking about the spell 'Avis' which conjures birds, but that only conjures something that mimics a bird! It won't die if you won't feed it. It actually cannot be feeded.
Magical Energy
Magical Energy. Magical Energy, this component does not make any sense at the start, of course, but once I start explaining it, it is bound to make sense to all of you. This is our power of the spells we cast, the enchantments we make, and more. Spell Casting is impossible without this one component, which is Magical Energy. You cannot conjure magical stuffs, which have magical powers and abilities in them. For example, take the conjuration of the invisibility cloak. If you are successful in conjuring one, it cannot make you invisible. It will only look alike a cloak, but will only have the look of a invisibility cloak.
Knowledge
Yes, Knowledge cannot be conjured. If it were so easy, why would you come to Hogwarts, your parents could simply conjure it for you, and you could be a 18 Year Old Wizard without taking any exams or hardships!
Though you can conjure the books that contain the knowledge you want, you must keep the book in your mind, the title and the content. It is, therefore, impossible to conjure knowledge. The extremely difficult task is to conjure a book with the knowledge insdie it, as you need to know everything about the book.
So, for today, I conclude the class with a Mandatory Quiz. I’ll see you next lesson, until then, bye.
