Potions Lesson 2 Year 1 : Potions Equipment and Items
Potions Blast - Another Lesson of Cauldrons
Professor is waiting for the students to line up again. Today, the dungeon is decorated with several cauldrons, and as usual, three seats for the students. Students arrive, "Welcome to the dungeons, again", says Professor Caballero.
So, as I hinted in the last lesson, we would be studying about the different equipment a potioneer requires. Let's get started!
Cauldrons are one of the major supplies for the Potions Class. There are many types of cauldrons, which we will be studying but the common ones in Britain include ; Pewter, Brass, Copper, Silver and Gold. Here is the image to identify : https://ibb.co/HgVrj4M.
Pewter - Pewter cauldrons are made up with pewter, which is an alloy of tin. They brew at a slow speed and are best for people who are looking for a cauldron with a low budget, it is good for beginners too ; those who start with potions just now. All Hogwarts students need a size two pewter cauldron.
Brass - As you all have guessed, this cauldron is made from brass, which is an alloy of copper and zinc. They brew at a medium sized speed ; and are faster than pewter.
Copper - Copper Cauldrons, are made up of copper ; which is a soft and malleable metal. They brew at a very fast speed, compared to Brass and Pewter cauldrons. It requires a bit of expertise to brew using this cauldron, though it brews fast. The first use of this cauldron was noted when copper was invented, which is in the Copper Age ; also known as the Chalcolithic Period.
Silver - Silver Cauldrons are not proven to be much useful, as they are only used to brew nocturnal potions, with the influence of the moon, which we will be going on in a minute. An example is the Grand Wiggenweld Potion.
Gold - This cauldron is mostly not brought by students, either due to its cost, or the lack of properties. It is very useful for brewing multiple types of advanced plants, and it will be mostly needed fifth year onwards, as we would be brewing advanced concoction. While brewing, with plants' qualities, the qualities of water to get approved, which is not good!
Besides all these, there are even cauldrons such as the Self Stirring Cauldrons which are used for brewing fast, or for pranks to people. Fire Crab shells make an excellent cauldron, but the problem is fire crabs are going extinct, and are protected for a century in the Fiji Islands.
Other than those, in South Asia, particularly in countries such as India, they pay more importance to gemstones and gemstone cauldrons, gemstone wand cores are commonly found there.
Other important ingredients include Mortar and Pestle, the Cauldron Cleaner, Stirring Utensils, Knife, Cutting Board, Copper Scales, Ruler and a Measurement Cup.
Now, let us come to the special effects of potions due to the full moon. Werewolves transforming at full moon is not the only property of it! There are several other properties, for example ; if the egg of a frog is kept in the hen's lap, it will turn into a basilisk egg! Some potions should be only brewed over the night, which are mostly dark potions.
Now, let's go to the topic of potions. How do you store the potions? They are stored in small tinted crystal glass phials. All potions cannot be immediately used after they are done brewing with it.
Some potions need some time to mature, and develop, as you might have absorbed, we don't feed bread to a 3 months old child, do we? In the same way, potions need some time to mature and develop.
You must always label a potion with important information such as expiry date, brewing date, effects, potion name and other specific allergy information, no matter the situation.
Now, the time is over, so meet you next time! Today, I am only giving you a quiz, so happy day!
